Course Objectives: At completion of this course, students should be able to

Objective 1: Write a power flow program using sparse matrix techniques.

Objective 2: Use approximate formula to compute transmission network losses.

Objective 3: Implement least squares method of performing state estimation.

Objective 4: Articulate power system security criteria and implement security assessment techniques.

Objective 5: Specify industry control standards and compute AGC response to disturbances for simple systems.

Objective 6: Compute economic characteristics of thermal power generation units.

Objective 7: Perform economic dispatch calculations.

Objective 8: Communicate the problem structure and solution approach for the optimal power flow and the security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF).

Objective 9: Communicate the problem structure and solution approach for the unit commitment and the security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC).

Objective 10: Identify how SCOPF and SCUC are used in today’s electricity markets.

Objective 11: Articulate the fuel scheduling problem for thermal units.

Objective 12: Articulate the hydro-thermal coordination problem.

Objective 13: Formulate production cost models.

Objective 14: Specify strengths and weaknesses of various optimization methods used to solve the different problems discussed in this course.

Disability Statement:

Please address any special needs or special accommodations with me at the beginning of the semester or as soon as you become aware. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) from the Disability Resources (DR) office. Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Please contact the Disability Resources Office coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. If you have a documented disability and anticipate needing accommodations in this course, please make arrangements to meet with me soon. Please request that a Disability Resources staff send a SAAR form verifying your disability and specifying the accommodations you will need. If you have a documented disability that requires assistance, you will need to go to the Disability Resource (DR) Office for coordination of your academic accommodations.
