The performance of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors in treating inhibitory/toxic compounds and Industrial effluents

Sock-Hoon Koh

Abstract

A literature review on the performance of UASB reactors in treating inhibitory/toxic compounds and industrial effluents over the past five years was reported in this paper. The treatment of sulfide, sulfite, sulfate, aromatic compounds, 3-carbon compounds, chlorinated organic compounds, polymers, heavy metals, cyanide, and selected industrial wastewaters in UASB reactors were reviewed. The performance of the treatment process was evaluated by the COD removal rate and methanogenic activity, and was found satisfactory in treating inhibitory/toxic compounds and strong industrial wastewaters.
