TERM PAPER ABSTRACTS:

Alternative Methods Used in the On- Site Bioremediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils

Ryan J. Gross

ABSTRACT

Various alternatives in the on-site bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils were evaluated with the intent of providing an introduction to the process of designing a treatment strategy. In-situ and ex-situ treatments were discussed, but the main focus was given to the use of biopiles and the different options associated with them, including moisture control, aeration, heating, nutrient supplementation, bioaugmentation, and composting. Landfarming was also considered. Each alternative was explained and evaluated in regards to cost and effectiveness. Based on this information, it was recommended that a thorough pre-treatment analysis of the conditions present in each individual situation be performed. The different alternatives may then be considered to devise the most appropriate method of remediation.
