Wastewater Treatment by Wetland Systems

Wongkarnka, Monchai

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews the general understanding in water and wastewater treatment by wetland systems. The significant and some performances of wetland systems in treating several pollutants from water and wastewater are summarized. The classification of wetland is categorized. Design consideration of free water surface wetlands (FWS) and subsurface flow wetlands (SF) are proposed. Plant species common used in wetland systems is presented. Mechanisms involved in wastewater treatment by wetland systems are briefly described. Lastly, a case study using a two-stage or hybrid constructed wetland to treat domestic sewage is included.
